The Efficiency and Reliability of Deburring Machines
When it comes to manufacturing improvements, deburring may not always be top of mind, but it’s a powerful way to create safe and consistent outcomes. Cleveland Deburring Machine Company (CDMC) deburrs for clients from a variety of different industries including the aerospace and defense industry, automobile manufacturing, heavy construction equipment and the manufacture of consumer goods.
Deburring Applications
The aerospace and defense industry are known for using exotic metals such as titanium for mission-critical components needing strength and reliability, offering a unique high ultimate tensile strength and a relatively low density. The deburring application for titanium is important for safety, functionality, corrosion resistance, aesthetics, manufacturing quality and reduced risk of damage.
Within the automobile industry, deburring solutions are used to de-flash and de-scale camshafts prior to turning. The camshaft is a critical part that’s enables a combustion engine to work. It is one of the older parts of the engine, and it’s incredible to think that such a device has received help from deburring practices since the 13th century.
The need to deburr is also important in the manufacture of heavy construction equipment for solutions on large spiral bevel gears and mating pinions. The action of smoothing the rough edges can ensure functionality, improve efficiency and extend longevity. Without a smooth process, gear teeth can disrupt the meshing action between the spiral bevel gear and the mating pinion. Reduced friction through deburring can also reduce the premature failure of these critical components.
Reduced part friction is also critical for the manufacture of consumer goods of all shapes and sizes. This category often includes a variety of everyday items. Having these items free from sharp pieces and rough edges improves safety for the employees creating the product and for the end user.
Deburring Process Improvements
Deburring can create improvements in a variety of ways. This can be in the form of chamfering, finishing, brush machining, polishing, honing and solutions for material removal. The removal of small, rough areas on gears, sprockets, camshafts and other parts translates into significant returns on the performance of machinery and the safety of employees.
But not all manufacturers may need a large-scale system to deburr. Luckily, CDMC has portable deburring machines specifically for smaller-sized manufacturers. One of these is the Basic Orbital Brushing (BOB) machine. Complete with a user-friendly interface, the single brush head can be fitted with a nylon disc brush up to 9-inches in diameter with the ability to deburr parts up to 10 inches in diameter, clockwise or counterclockwise.
Other portable options include the 1TC and 1TR machine. The caster-based machines are efficient and dependable and offer smaller manufacturers a low-cost method for deburring green powdered parts prior to sintering. If you’re looking for a workhorse on wheels, look no further than the CART machine. The CART features a bi-directional rotating part spindle and a radial nylon brush driven by a 1HP reversible motor. You can fit the grinder stanchion with a variety of air motors and tool options for trouble-free operation.
