Agreement on Highway Funding Helps Out Manufacturers
Any manufacturer knows that making the best product you can is only one part of the business. Whether you make engine parts or children’s toys, once your product is manufactured, you need a shipping infrastructure to get it to your clients. All the manufacturing in the world does no good if your products just end up sitting in your warehouse, gathering dust. That’s why manufacturing relies on the national transportation system of trains, planes, shipping, and highways more than almost any other industry in America.
And that’s why many manufacturers all over the country were concerned about an anticipated shortfall in the Highway Trust Fund, which provides funding for highway construction and other transportation needs. Fortunately, the Senate recently passed the Highway and Transportation Funding Act of 2014 (H.R. 5021) to help avoid the danger of a bankrupt Highway Trust Fund. According to the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), the Act will increase stability for as many as 700,000 jobs at nearly 100,000 construction sites, not to mention helping ensure that manufacturers (and everyone else) have good, dependable roads to drive on and to transport their goods.
That’s the good news. The bad news is that the Highway and Transportation Funding Act of 2014 only provides stable funding for the Highway Trust Fund for the next few months. It’s a helpful stopgap measure, but the larger problem of an anticipated shortfall in the Fund remains. NAM and other manufacturing advocacy groups have encouraged members of the House and Senate to work together to deliver a long-term solution that will maintain the Fund for years to come, and prevent us from reaching this point again.
